Tobacco Prevention Tactics Package #66
SMOKING: THE TOXIC TRUTH
A tobacco prevention video designed to discourage young people from starting to smoke. Students see evidence of the horrific medical consequences of smoking.
Dr. Erin Boh, a dermatologist, explains that “smoking prematurely ages skin, causing facial wrinkles and sagging around the mouth.”
With a positive conclusion, this documentary video features teens warning their peers about tobacco toxicity and addiction, giving them the good advice to say no to smoking.
TOBACCO: JUST SAY KNOW
Did you KNOW that tobacco use is the most preventable cause of death in the United States? Did you KNOW that tobacco companies target their advertisements to young people—trying to get them hooked now, so they can become their customers later? Did you KNOW that most young people do not smoke regularly, or even admire those who do?
Showing Tobacco: Just Say Know to your students gives them a chance to face the facts, so they can know why to say no. In this informative middle school video, teen narrators guide younger students through a lively question and answer format that delivers hard facts about tobacco: the drug nicotine addicts you, while the tar and other chemicals and toxins in cigarettes—arsenic, cadmium, formaldehyde, etc.—kill you. They stress that the deadly diseases caused by smoking—cancer, emphysema, and heart disease—may not be so far away in the “distant future.”
TOBACCO HORROR PICTURE SHOW
This hit video combines humor with horror in a memorable format to drive home the message that nicotine hooks you, while tar in tobacco kills you. Featured is Debi Austin, a throat cancer victim who smokes through the hole in her neck where her larynx used to be. In the video, dramatic presentations by “vampires” and other horror genre characters are balanced with interviews from recovering teen smokers and dippers who offer sage advice to fellow students: "Don't start!"
